The topic which we are going to discuss today will make you understand about the scientific basis of Yoga. Yoga has deeply understood the gist of functioning of this body & life. Anyone who understands mechanism of Yoga, can help himself to be happy & healthy too, by sublimating the upcoming health challenges, diseases or disorders. These are not words or philosophy; this is what our ancient scriptures and Yoga Sutras state. All this scientific knowledge was practiced, understood & documented by our sages thousands of years ago and it is utterly important and relevant even today, that’s why it is entirely important to understand this process. Scriptures said : “Yat Brahmande tatPinde ” this means : Whatever is there in the universe, it is also there in our body as well. Whatever is happening in the universe is happening in this body too. Because this body is a miniature of the bigger universe. There are mainly 03 Nadi’s namely: Ida, Pingala & Sushumna, these are the pathways from where our “Prana Vayu” i.e. life energies flows. Which are also called (Sun) Surya Nadi & (Moon) Chandra Nadi. Pingala is the right channel. Pingala is red, masculine, hot, strength, energy & it represents the Sun or Surya Nadi. Ida is the left channel. Ida is white, feminine, cold, quite, calm, restful, it represents the Moon or Chandra Nadi. A well balanced life is a balance between these two Nadi’s. If you understand these two Nadi’s, it’s good enough to stay healthy. In today’s fast moving life, activation of (Moon) Chandra Nadi can sole many of your problems. Sage Patanjali Yoga Sutras said: Heyam Dukham Anagatam: Means that the pain that is yet to come can be avoided” by correct Yoga practice. Shandilya Upanishad says : This means: (Moon) Chandra Nadi represents “Tamas” (lazy) & (Sun)Surya Nadi represents “Rajas” (active) When we are sleeping in the night (Moon) Chandra Nadi remains active, we are in relaxing mode, no external body movement at all, because we are in “tamas” (laziness). That’s why it is important to do Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) in the morning to become active for the day. Yoga says a well balanced life is a balance between these two Nadi’s. Gita said : समत्वंयोग उच्यते (Samatvam Yog Cchatte- Balance is Yoga ). Swami Mahavira and Buddha also said the same thing: which means we need to balance these two Nadi’s and then only the third Nadi called Sushumna gets activated. Which is said to be the essence of Yoga.
Modern Life Style and Hyper Surya Nadi
Our Surya Nadi is already hyper activated now-a-days due to our modern lifestyle. Fast forward life, eagerness to earn more and more, competitiveness in everything we do. All this increases Surya Nadi. Lord Vishnu has been seen to be shaded by several hood serpent in our scriptures. Excess (Sun)Surya Nadi activation is like poison, it is toxic, it can cause disturbances, disorders and then diseases. Whereas, on the other side, Lord Shiva is seen wearing crescent moon on his head: because (Moon) Chandra Nadi represents “Amrit” Holy water. There is no doubt that we need both (Sun)Surya Nadi , (Moon) Chandra Nadi active for life. But, because of our lifestyle (Sun)Surya Nadi already hyper activated. What are we suppose to do now? As, (Sun)Surya Nadi is already hyper activated & to bring about the balance between the two we need to elevate our ,(Moon) Chandra Nadi because Sun is already hyper due to modern life style. We need to know that how Surya Nadi gets hyper activated : Fast running, fast food, competitiveness, fast-fast 108 Surya Namaskar, fast Breathing exercise, too much of Kriyas like Kapalbharti or Bhastrika. Now, how to increase our (Moon) Chandra Nadi ? Sage Patanjali in Yog Sutras said : “Sthiram Sukham Asanam” which means your asana posture should be steady and comfortable. Next he said “ प्रयत्नषैथिल्यानन्तसमापत्तिभ्याम् -योग सूत्र 2/47 ” means your practice has to be effortless, you don’t have to do any sort of tussle with your body. Respect the limitations of your body and don’t ever try to overdo or stress out your Yoga practice. We should not go by the fancy fallacies shown by famous people on YouTube or TV channels and get carried away. We should follow what is written in our original and authentic scriptures and Yoag sutras written by Sage Maharishi Patanjali.
Pranayam and Chandra Nadi
Let us focus on how we can increase our (Moon) Chandra Nadi. Our Exhalation should be longer to activate Chandra Nadi. Our sages knew this and thus very carefully they used “OM”kara chanting and devised Bhambri Pranayam, so that we exhale more and more and Moon gets activated. That’s why before every mantra or chanting Omkara is added. Because we exhale longer while chanting Omkara and hence , Chandra Nadi starts getting activated. Lord Shiva was called “Omkareshwar”. When someone comes after long running, they exhale deeply and not inhale, because by running fast you have increased your Surya Nadi and now body is trying to bring it back to original state by increasing Chandra Nadi. Which is essential for life. You would have heard about people having sudden heart attack while running, its all because or extreme imbalance and hyper active (Sun)Surya Nadi in particular time. Whenever some tough & strenuous task is over; we says huff exhale deeply, It’s over now. Why ? Because body knows that after being stressed we need to relax i.e. needs to activate our Moon. Remember that sigh of relief, that’s how body relaxes. To activate Chandra Nadi we do longer exhalations like chanting Omkara, Bhamri (making humming bee sound” & exhale for longer time). We do Nadi Shodhan which is know as Anulom vilom now-a-days. The ratio for that as per our ancient text in scriptures is 1:4:2 means if we are inhaling for 04 seconds we need to exhale double i.e o8 seconds. Kapalbbharti and Bhastrika are called as kriyas Hatha Yoga Pratipika, they are okay to be done for short time 1-3 minutes duration for cleaning purpose of airway, before slow breathing and long exhalation Pranayams. When your Chandra Nadi will get activated your health will be better, as both Nadi’s will come into balance and harmony with each other.

Chandra Nadi may be called as Parasympathetic Nervous system and Surya Nadi as Sympathetic Nervous system . Let us understand that when our Surya Nadi or Sympathetic Nervous system is hyper activated which sort of problems or diseases we succumb to :
➢ Increased Dilation pupil, eye related problems
➢ Increase in heart beat, hypertension and other heart diseases
➢ Increase in oxygen consumption, overload on lungs
➢ Hampered activity of Digestive system leading to poor digestion, colitis, IBS, intestinal problems, disturbed pancreatic activity, insulin production imbalance, Diabetes etc.
➢ Urinary system irritation
➢ Malfunctioning of kidneys On the other hand
all these organs relax and work well when Chandra Nadi or Parasympathetic Nervous system is in command. Thus, we need a balance between the two for optimal functioning of this body. Here, I have explained briefly within short span of time, in lieu of time. So, that you can understand the interplay of these system and Nadi’s as per our scriptures and Yoga Grantha. we are warning you, not to fall prey for the strategic marketing strategies of false people. Because they will present with Yoga & ultimately bring their other products in front of you to buy, it’s a huge market. They want you to be sick and needing all those products, so that their business flourishes. So, please beware of all such things. we are telling you all this, because we care about you and want you to not fall prey to false fallacies, being promotes extensively now-a-days.
Fast Killing You, be Slow
Let’s see what else we can do to increase our Chandra Nadi ? Blow conkshell/ Shankha : your lungs and heart will become strong, exhalation is longer and hence your Moon gets activated. Don’t be astonished to hear that our ancestors used to say that: till where ever, the voice of conkshell/ shankha will be heard, till there: there will be all bliss & health, goodness and well being.It’s because when you are well, healthy & strong everything else will be automatically well, environment will be purified and cleansed, because its only we humans who create misery here and there. When we chant some Mantra, as I am doing now: Mahamrityunjaya mantra:
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् |
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् ||
Aum Tryambakam yajaamahe sugandhim pushtivardhanam |
Urvaarukamiva bandhanaan-mrityormuksheeya maamritaat |
You see that while chanting, I exhale for longer without even much effort, and in turn my Chandra Nadi gets activated too. But, today people will give you a Japa Mala and tell you to chant mantra fast fast 108 times, 21 times and increase your Sun indeed. Whole process gets disturbed, whole intention gets ruined of chanting, no benefit is reaped. “Rajas” will come and “Sattva” will go. I get worried when I see people are just unconscious and unaware following the instructions and not being able to notice the changes all these fast things bring inside them, disturbing the whole science and mechanism of body. Chant any mantra, do it for just 10 times but do it slowly, making your exhalation longer and longer, so that the ultimate purpose is not lost. NEXT is do Shavasana/Corpse Pose: Sit in silence, relax, mediate, you make yourself still, try to feel yourself and introspect about yourself, do it as slow as you can, take your time. Eat food without any other engagement or being glued to some screen. Anything and everything that has FAST attached to it is dangerous, beware of it because it will increase your Surya Nadi. Fast lifestyle, Fast running, fast food, fast-fast 108 Surya Namaskar, fast modern Breathing exercise, too much of kriyas like Kapalbharti or bhastrika. Just see the people who are doing all this, their problems in life, the type of diseases they suffer and mutual disturbances they suffer from in their family life. So, focus more on increasing Chandra Nadi : do slow breathing, do asanas with ease and effortlessness to balance the two Nadi’s . If your (Sun)Surya Nadi is already hyper active , do forward bending Asana, it will help.
Nature , Sign and Surya Nadi
Now, let me tell you few characteristics of people who’s Surya Nadi is hyper activated: irritating behavior, loud pitch of voice, unstable behavior, getting angry on little little things, increased blood pressure, not able to sit patiently & relax. Be cautious about all these symptoms of hyper active Surya Nadi. Activate Chandra Nadi to bring a balance in body and hence life too, to live a happy and healthy life style.
